Laughing kookaburras are part of the bird family. They have a distinctive “laugh”, so people call them laughing kookaburra. Their laugh often can be heard at down and dusk.
Laughing kookaburras are the world’s largest kingfisher. They measure up to 46cm from the tip of their beaks to the tip of their tails. Their plumage is shades of whites and browns, which help them to blend easily into their environment. They have stout, squat bodies with large heads and long beaks.
Laughing kookaburras live in forests, open woodlands or on the edges of plains in NSW.
Laughing kookaburras use their strong beaks to catch fish, small snakes, lizards, rodents, worms, beetles and other insects.
Laughing kookaburras live in the one place for most of their life. They establish a social system in which only the dominant male and female in a family group will breed, usually between spring and mid summer. They make nests in tree hollows or on the ground, where the female will lay up to three eggs. During this time, the rest of the family helps out with the incubation, feeding and protection of the young.

Because of the large area and many many people, there are 56 nations in China. Every nation has their own lifestyles and language, but most of people speak Mandarin or Cantonese.
In China people have religion freedom. There are Daoism, Buddhism, Muslim and Christian. But many people don't profess any religions.
China has a 5000-year-history. The People’s Republic of China established in 1 October,1949.
China is a developing country, agriculture is in the leading position. 50% people work in the agriculture field, 22% people work in the industry field and 28% work in the services.
The Chinese economy is developing faster and faster.

ARCHIBALD PRIZE 2

Last Thursday our AMEP class went to the Art Gallery to visit the Archibald prize.
The subjects of the portraits in this year’s Archibald prize are some self portraits, some politicians, some stars. I think most of them are the famous people.. I was very sad, because I don’t know anybody. The painters are not only from Australia, but also from New Zealand, China and British. There is a few Aboriginal people amongst them.
There are 36 portraits and the winner’s portrait is my favourite portrait..It is a self portrait. The main colour is dark, only on the top is orange. The face is not very clear, and it has two old face, one looks at forward and the other one looks at backward. The painter is an old man, this portrait means he is too old, and he looks backward, because he had a wonderful life, he looks forward, because he want to continue keeping a good life, though it is dusk for him. Because of the special meaning, so I like this portrait.
Some portraits I don’t like, for example, a woman painter draw herself naked. I can’t understand why she want to paint, maybe this is the difference between Eastern and Western culture.

Deng Yaping is a famous Chinese athlete. She played table tennis.
Table tennis is Chinese state sport. Most of Chinese people like to play and watch table tennis.
In China there are many table tennis athletes, who won many championships, and Deng is the best one. She won 18 world championships, four of which are Olympic games championships.
Deng started playing table tennis at the age of five. At first the Henan provincial team removed her outside, because she is too short. She is only 150cm. But later she won both the team and single championship in the national youth table tennis competition, and then the Henan provincial team took her on. She joined the national sport team in 1998. In 1992 and 1996 at Barcelona and Atlanta Olympic games she got four gold medals. She is the only Chinese single and double gold medallist in both the 25th and 26th Olympic games. She is reputed as the “Table Tennis Queen” and “Short Giantess”.
After 1997 Deng studied in Qinghua University, Cambridge University and Nottingham University. Now she works in the IOC Athletes Commission and she is the staff member of the Marketing Department in Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic games.

Mel Gibson is one of the most famous Australian actors and directors. He won an Academy Award as the best director for “Braveheart”, which won five Oscars in all.
Originally Gibson wanted to become a journalist, but he attended the National Institutes of Dramatic in Sydney to study drama. In his first play he was too nervous to stand and had to play the role sitting down.
Gibson is a devoted family man and brings his family of seven children and wife with him on location whenever he is working.
Gibson is also a interesting man. In 1997 at Harvard he ate a spoonful of canned dog food from a dog dish inscribed with his name, and sank his teeth into a dog biscuit. “It freshens your breath and helps prevent tartar,” he joked, spoofing the “Lethal Weapon” movie character who munched on dog biscuits to quit smoking.

My hometown is Dalian which is a very beautiful city. I wasn't born there, but I grew up there.
Dalian is located in the southern tip of Liaodong Peninsula in northeast China. There are Yellow Sea on the east and Bohai Sea on the west.
Dalian's climate is very nice, there are four seasons. In winter it isn't very cold, and in summer it isn't very hot.
Because of the good geographic situation and weather, Dalian is an important port, and also a trade, industry and tourism city. Dalian is called "Garden City", because there are many gardens, parks and squares. Most of the parks are near the sea. Along the southern coast a road runs among the mountains. Along the road there are the Bangchui Island, the Tiger Beach, the Fujia Village, the Zoo and the Xinghai Park. The most famous place in Dalian is the Romantic Golden Pebble Beach. This is a national tourist resort. There are the Golden Pebble Golf Club, the Golden Rock Park, the Waxwork Museum, the China Martial Art Hall and the International Hunting Club.
Every year in Dalian there are many exhibitions held in Xinghai Square, which is the biggest square in Asia. The most important show is the International Fashion Festvial. Designers, models and fashion agents from all over the world come to Dalian.
In winter the most important activity is the Spring Festivial Fireworks and Forecrackers Gathering. People come to Xinghai Square to watch the fireworks and firecrackers. They gather together to celebrate the Chinses New Year.
The population of Dalian is 5600000. People are very warm and friendly. Many tourists in China like to travel in Dalian.

THE SICKNESS

Five years ago I was quite sick. I caught a bad cold.
It was very cold in winter. At first my throat didn’t hurt, I didn’t have a cough and a running nose, but I had an upset tummy. I didn’t want to eat anything. I thought I just had an attack of indigestion. So I didn’t go to see a doctor, and took some pills for indigestion. Though I had had the pills, I felt more and more uncomfortable. After two days, I had a fever in the evening everyday. The temperature was very high, about 39 degrees. I didn’t tell anyone about this, just took some pills. It lasted one week. One day in the evening the temperature was almost 40 degrees, I felt very cold. My mother-in-low found that I was ill, she called my sister, and my sister took me to see the doctor at midnight. After checking, the doctor said I had caught a very bad cold. I was given five antibiotics shots. From the beginning to the end, I had been ill for fifteen days.
Because I was allergic to penicillin, the doctor gave me another antibiotic. It was very expensive. If I ever catch a cold again, I think I’ll go to hospital without delay. Maybe I’ll get well quickly.

Indigenous people are the first Australians, but since British landed in Australia, they have suffered racial discrimination from the governments and the community. Indigenous people didn’t get the same rightws and services as non-Indigenous people in areas of population, health, employment, income, accommodation, public education, law and justice. Most Indigenous people live in rural or remote areas. Most Aboriginal people don’t have enough housing, water quality, food supplies and sanitation. Their incomes are lower than the average for other Australians. They were dismissed from works without any explanations. Until 1969, Aboriginal Protection or Welfare Boards controlled and supervised the lives of Indigenous Australians. These boards could decide where Indigenous people could lice, whom they might marry, where and how their children could be raised and which jobs could have, etc.
In 1965 Indigenous people started to fight for their rights with the Freedom Ride in NSW. There was a demonstration against racial discrimination. During the period 1955-1970, much of the discriminatory legislations were removed. Some states and the Commonwealth drew up anti-discrimination legislations during and after the 1970s. In 1991 the legislation about prohibitions on racial discrimination existed in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. This is also Commonwealth legislation.
Nevertheless, the struggle for social justice continues today.

MELZINHA'S BOWL

Melzinha's parents bought this bowl for her birthday in 1999, because she wanted to have a bowl painted with the monuments of Paris and her name.She used this bowl to eat breakfast every morning. But in 2000 the bowl fell down from the cupboard and a piece of it was broken.Now she has put the bowl in her bedroom with the other objects that she loves. She is going to pass on the bowl to her children as a traditional artifact.

I have a jewellery box that my mother in-law gave me as a present when my husband and I married. The jewellery box looks like a model carriage. It is black red and beautiful. I like it very much. But when I came to Australia, I didn't take it with me. My mother in-law keeps it for me. So I'm very sorry that I can't show you the photo of the box. Maybe next time I come back to China I will bring it back.

WOMBATS

Wombats are part of the marsupial family. Marsupials are mammals with the pouches for the babies.
They live in Australia.
Adult wombats are 33cms tall and almost 1 metre long. They weigh around 35kgs. They have thick soft fur and hairy noses. They have short powerful legs and strong claws for digging. They use their front legs to dig burrows where they sleep. Female wombats have pouches that open backwards so that when they are digging they don't cover their babies with sand.
Wombats' babies are very small when they are born. They climb into the pouches and live there until they are old enough to leave the pouches for a short time. Each day they go out into the world and then come back into the pouches to drink and sleep.
Most of the day wombats sleep in a burrow. In the evening or at night they go looking for food. They are vegetarians.
Wombats are one of Australian's most endangered marsupial.

I have many friends in China. But now in Australia I don't have many friends, because I have been here only for half a year.
Last year I made contact with one of my old friends again. We met each other quite by chance in Sydney.
She has been my friend since 1987. At that time we studied in the same class in high school. After finishing school, though we studied in the different colleges, we contacted each other sometimes. But since 1995 I had lost touch with her. I heard from the other friend that she has immigranted to Australia. She has been in Sydney for ten years.
Last year on Australian Day we met again in Hyde Park. My sons got two balloons. They played them on the grass. I saw a little pretty Chinese girl who was looking at my son's balloons. She said to her mother:"Mum,they have beautiful balloons. Why don't I have one?"When I heard what she said, I gave her a balloon. Her mother said "thank you" to me and shouted :"I know you."At the same time I knew her too. We were very happy and exchanged our phone numbers.
Now I often visit her family.

THE DIFFERENCENS BETWEEN TWO PHOTOS

5.This difference is found on Jian's jumper. On one picture there is an extra stripe.

7. I found this difference on Nentis's skirt. On the bottom of the skirt ,on one photo there is one line of the stitch, but on other one there are two lines of the stitches .
8. Saideh wears a pair of blue jeans, but on the other photo she wears a pair of orange jeans.
9. I found that the coloursof saideh's eyes are different.
10.Bside the Saideh's leg there is a bag, I think the colours f the bag are different.
11.There is a difference between the two picture on Saideh's scarf.
12.Kangaroo has two ears ,but on the other photo there is an ear.
13.Kangaroo has three legs, but on the othe one it has two legs.

Guy Sebastian , the famous pop star in Australia,was born in Malaysia on 26,October,1981. When he was six years old in 1987, he came to Australia with his family.
Guy is very famous in Australia because he was the winner of the very popular Australia Idol Show last year and he has had three #1 singles . He has a new single named Oh Oh mixed funk Disco ,R&B and pop. He is coming to Sydney on 31,May,2005.
There is something interesting about Guy.The first time he sang in front of audiences was in high school. When he stood on the stage his classmates pointed and laughed at him. At the end of the song he cried.
When he was a child, he played violin,but he only learned one song and played it at every family gathering and party for three years.

There is a beautiful place in China. There are mountains,a large lake and forests. When you travel here,you can find a wonderful view: crystal lake water,wide lake and the silvery hint under the sun in the morning. The peaks are very awe inspiring, and the forests are very lush. When you walk along the lake , you can breath the fresh air.

DIFFERENCES ABOUT ARANCIA BETWEEN THE OWNER'S WEBSITE AND THE REVIEW

After reading both the owner's website and the review, I think there are some differences . The owner's website is general, many details aren't written here. But the review is detailed, and includes the author's feelings.
The owner just tells us that Arancia stands on the brow of a hill, and there the quiet and beautiful rural views and luxury accommodation. I think the owner omits something, for example, when we read it , we don't know where Arancia is, how far it is from Sydney, which hill it stands, if children are welcome, if I can smoke inside and about the meal we don't know anything.
The review is more detailed and better than the owner's website. After I read the review, I know all the things that I want to know. In the review the author used many positive adjectives to describe Arancia. That affects me and I like going there.

EXCURSION IN SOUTH COAST

The South Coast of NSW is a beautiful coastal region. It is only a few hours from south of Sydney.
There are quiet and mostly untouched national parks and white beaches. Some towns and villages are near the beaches. When you come here, you can visit Kangaroo Valley, Jervis Bay,etc.
The fresh seafood such as crayfish, prawns, crabs and oysters is very wonderful.
We're going to Jervis Bay in South Coast this holiday. We want to drive there on the Princes Highway. That is the quickest way.

Every Spring in Northern China people experience strong wind with sand.
Many years ago Spring was the most beautiful season in Northern China. People liked to go outside and breathed the fresh air in spite of the strong wind. But with the development of the economy and society, the environment is destroyed and the environmental pollutions are more and more serious.
There are two main conditions. The first one is the strong and durable gale.This is the power of this weather. The second one is that there is plenty of loose dry sand and dust on the ground.
Two years ago when I was in China, I experienced the wind with sand. The sky was grey, the gale blew with sand and dust. If you walked on the road , you couldn't open your eyes. At that time I had to stay at home and closed the door and windows.But after a while there was sand on the windowsill.
I'm very glad that people have been aware of this situation and begin to change it. In my hometown people have planted many trees and grasses. It looks like a garden city. There is still strong wind in Spring, but sand has been reduced.

Dear mum and dad,
How are you? I hope everyone at home is well.
We have been in Australian for two months. We are all much better. Don't worry about us.
On the Christmas holiday we spent three days camping in a beautiful park. We travelled by car.Left Sydney on Monday and got there five hours later. We had plenty to eat and drink. The two children were very happy because this was the first time they slept in a tent. The first day we went bushwalking. It was hard, but we felt excited. The second day we played games on the grass and the third day ,the weather was nice, we had a BBQ,and we invited some people who were in the park to eat with us. We talked, ate and drank. We made friends.
It's a wonderful holiday! We should do it more often.
I wish you could come! Maybe next year.
I have to go now. The children want me to play with them.

We arrived safely in Queensland.The people here are very friendly,the food is delicious.
Yesterday we went to the beach on the Gold Coast. It is very beautiful. The sand is white and soft. The weather is hot, it's summer. We waded and swam in the sea.

That was one day in September ,2004.
The sky was grey and very cloudy. The cloud became thicker and thicker. It was getting darker and darker. A storm was coming.
Suddenly it was thundering and lightning. It was heavy raining with hail and strong wind. The hail was as big as egg. What big hail! The hail and rain lasted some time, then stopped.
After the rain, we looked at the roads ,the houses, the cars and the trees. They were badly damaged. The roads were covered by hail, the trees were broken, the roofs were leaked, the tiles were blown off. The cars were changed beyond recognition. The trains ,buses and power supplies were stopped.
What terrible weather!

Last Sunday they decided to have a picnic in the National Park on the weekend. They did some shopping on Friday and prepared the things that they need. In the morning they drove to the park after breakfast.

Now they are sitting on the grass and having their picnic. They are eating, drinking and chatting. They are very happy.

They took photos, made a snowman and fought with snowballs. The woman enjoyed the snow view and looked at a boy who was skating on the lake. He was her son. Her son,the snow view and happy people made her remember something.

Many years ago , in this park she had met her husband in winter. At that time she was walking along the road beside the lake and was enjoying the snow view. She liked the snow, because it made her feel all pure. Suddenly a big snowball hit her back and gave her a start. She slipped and fell. She got a pain through her left foot and couldn't stand up. At this time a handsome man came and helped her. He called an ambulance and took her to the hospital. She felt grateful. From this time on, they fell in love.The following winter, they held their wedding ceremony in this park.

That was a memorable day for them.They like winter and snow more and more.
